Voice in Digital Discourse
The purpose of this presentation is to explore the implication of a sociocultural theory of voice in the context of digital discourse. In the digital environment, students often have more freedom in constructing and negotiating their own discursive identity by drawing on a wider variety of discursive and non-discursive resources, such as intertextual references to various genres and the use of visual and sound features. I will illustrate how the hybrid and multimodal tendencies of digital discourse provide opportunities for students to construct and negotiate their own discursive identity that is simultaneously individual and social.

Strategies to Maximize Writing in the Context of a Digital Classroom

This presentation examines writing instruction in the digital classroom from a pedagogical perspective.   Various teaching strategies are discussed within a frame posed by three guiding questions:  What about writing do you want to maximize?  What technologies could you use?  What factors should you consider?  Multiple examples from L2 student writing are presented and critically evaluated in light of the pedagogical strategies presented.  Extensive handouts will be provided to illustrate the suggestions forwarded in this talk.

The Machine Scoring of Essays: Redefining Writing Pedagogy?

The machine scoring of essays (a.k.a automated writing evaluation [AWE] or automated essay scoring [AES]) is a relatively new classroom application. In my presentation, I will address one of the programs typically used for classroom writing/writing assessment - MY Access! I will define MY Access, give a bit of background, and then discuss a small study in which some ELLs used MY Access. I will report their attitudes toward MY Access focusing on the impact that MY Access! and similar programs might have on second language writers and writing.
